Ghanaian gospel musician, Sonnie Badu, has expressed concerns about the growing commercialization of gospel music. The “Baba” hitmaker encouraged gospel artists to ensure their songs retain spiritual depth, despite the financial benefits that come from the industry.
While acknowledging the importance of earning from their craft, Sonnie Badu emphasized that gospel music must remain a medium for spreading faith, hope, and redemption. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between spirituality and commercialization.
“The spirit-filled can be commercialized, and that’s perfectly fine—it’s how you benefit from your gift,” he said during an interview on Star FM. “However, you must strike a balance. Don’t become so focused on commercialization that you lose sight of the spiritual essence.”
Sonnie Badu also noted that digital platforms have opened new avenues for gospel musicians to monetize their music. He stressed that artists who share their songs online are not doing so for free, urging gospel musicians to take advantage of these opportunities while maintaining their spiritual integrity.
The second edition of Sonnie Badu’s “Rhythms of Africa” concert will take place at Independence Square on Friday, November 29, 2024.
