The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to approve the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, before the end of his administration.

Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on December 22, 2024, Dr. Kwakye expressed confidence that the President would solidify his legacy by assenting to the bill.

Dr. Kwakye emphasized the importance of the bill, noting that it was a key initiative supported by the church under his predecessor’s leadership, and described it as a “birthday gift” from the church in this anniversary year.

He appealed to President Akufo-Addo to ensure the bill becomes law, in line with the church’s goal of preserving African values through the gospel.

His remarks came after the Supreme Court of Ghana dismissed two petitions challenging the constitutionality of the bill, allowing it to move forward.

The bill, which was passed by Parliament in February 2024, has been a contentious issue, with proponents asserting it safeguards traditional family values, while critics argue it violates human rights.

Despite the Court’s ruling, President Akufo-Addo has indicated he is waiting for all pending legal matters to be resolved before making a final decision.
